This is the theme for Heart of the Matter Online’s Meme this week. I, for one, try to limit outside activities as much as possible, because I have found that with too many of them, my schedule becomes way too overwhelming. I think that outside activities can be good, but with 6 kids and the financial constraints that come with that, this has not been a doable thing for me. Just with all that I have to do at home and the errands that I have to run each week, I am overwhelmed enough already!

The only outside activities that we doing this year are going to our church’s homeschool group once or twice a month and an occasional field trip. We also have a homeschoolers park day that we go to on Mondays as well. As far as sports and music, my husband is very musically inclined and has taught one of my sons the guitar and one of my daughters how to play the conga drums. The only sports interest so far has been surfing and skateboarding (this is my 13 year old son), which doesn’t require being a part of team or scheduled practices.

I remember reading an article when I had first started homeschooling or a few years after, by Karen Andreola and the words that she said really stuck with me. She said that she missed the years when they only had one car and she had to stay home. Those were her greatest memories. She got a lot more done in those times. And the time spent with her children was priceless. I have to say that she is so right because I find that when we have had too many activities to go to, we got hardly anything done with our schoolwork, as far as the 3Rs, which to me are the most important.

So as far as this year is concerned, we will limit those outside activities. Next year, may be a different story. My son will be in 9th grade and I want to prepare him for college. So I will probably be doing the co op thing for math and science (those not being my best subjects!) But for now, I am happy to be a homebody.

Well, it is the end of an era, as far as our hip homeschool is concerned. I will continue to sell my unit studies on CurrClick but will no longer be homeschooling my children, starting this fall. I have told my Facebook friends of the books that I have that I need to get rid of. I will be listing the books that I have for sale for the next few days, adding to the list as I go along. The books are in good to very good condition, some are even ones that I just bought this past fall. I accept PayPal or money orders and I ship media mail. I just got done filling in the block schedule template that I put together for this coming school year. I chose this style of schedule because I have never been a schedule down to the minute type of person. Those kind just drive me crazy and I feel like a failure if I don’t do such and such a subject by such and such a time. It is just maddening. Well then someone told me about block scheduling and I was on it. Anyway, I have added it to my download widget in my side bar for you to see how I filled it in. There are blank ones in pdf and Word files that you can fill in for your own family, using mine as a guide. I used the Word Doc version so that I could type it into the pages on the computer. If you prefer writing it in yourself, the pdf version is good for that.

Well now on to lesson planning, which I started several days ago but put down for a short time to do this. Right now I am working on my Creation Science Unit that I will be putting the lesson plans to on this blog. Hope that everyone has a great weekend!

Right now I am in the middle of putting together our schedule for this year in our homeschool. I have made a block schedule and weekly goal sheet that you can download from the sidebar of my blog, for those of you who are interested. I haven’t filled in our schedule form yet but when I do that, I will be putting that up on my blog as well. I pretty much have what Cindy Rushton calls “table time” in the mornings, when we do all of the basics and our unit study read alouds and activities in the afternoons. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, we will have our artist/picture study one day and our composer/music study on the other. We will also have a day, Thursday, I believe, for world geography and Wednesday we will have US geography to go with our Early American History Unit we are doing this year. History units will be done on Mon., Wed., and Fri.; Science units on Tuesday and Thurs. So far, that is how it is looking, although we will see how it goes and tweak it, if needed.

We start school on September 2nd and I will start to put up my Creation Science Unit lesson plans up on my blog around that time, either that week or the week after. I actually look forward to getting started again and getting back into the swing of things. My kids are another story!

Welcome to our homeschool blog! I am Heather L. and I am a homeschool mom of 6 children, 5 still in school and one just graduated. I just started a homeschool unit study business back in December 2007 called Hip2Homeschool Unit Studies . This blog is about our homeschool days here in the beautiful state of  Virginia. I will share about our day to day schooling, as well as share our lesson plans for unit studies that we are doing, one of which will be our Creation Science Unit.

Right now, I am in the process of putting together our lesson plans and schedule for our homeschool year starting in September.

I hope that you come to visit us from time to time and enjoy what we are doing. If you feel lead to use some of my lesson plans (ones specifically for our own homeschool, not my ones for sale) for your own family, you are more than welcome to.

Enjoy your summer!

Blessings,

Heather L.
